History/Culture
The earliest known settlers on Eleuthera were the Lucayan Indians, but virtually all of these native people took an unfortunate, one-way boat ride in the late 15th century. During those dark days, these innocent, simple islanders met the masters of passing Spanish galleons that first made port on Eleuthera and soon after enslaved the native Indians. The Spanish mariners then began shipping the shackled Lucayan's off to South America where they were forced to mine for gold and silver destined to enrich the King of Spain.

When the first struggling English adventurers were shipwrecked on a reef called the Devil’s Backbone in the 1640s, they took refuge in what is now known as Preacher’s Cave. This cave (which you ought to visit for yourself) is also believed to be the site of the first Christian religious service in The Islands Of The Bahamas -- and it has a carved stone pulpit to prove it.

It’s very common to catch a smile or a wave from the natives on Eleuthera/Harbour Island, one of the friendliest places in The Islands Of The Bahamas. True to their colourful multiracial historical influences, the family tree of many Eleutherans presents an ancestry of Puritan, Loyalist and former slave bloodlines.
